Iron Knot Institute

IronKnot Institute

Iron Knot Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. We offer learning and practice materials for the cultivation of good heart and compassion in the face of adversity. These are designed for those working for the welfare of others, including educators, students, non-profits, frontline workers, community organizations, and activists.

On whatever level these tools are applied – from the intimate sphere of personal experience to the complex dynamics of family, community, national and even international relations – they will lead infallibly towards fulfillment and peace.

The Iron Knot Institute is also home to Iron Knot Press.

Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche, Tibetan Buddhist master, (1930-2002) often said that the purpose of genuine spiritual practice is the cultivation of "good heart." He used this simple term to describe the breadth of the compassionate wisdom mind we are all born with and never depart from.

Iron Knot Ranch was founded in 1999 as a response to the confusion and suffering in our world—a refuge and training ground for those who wish to make a difference. For the past 20 years, we have offered trainings at Iron Knot Ranch as well as other venues across the United States. These trainings brought to a secular audience the tradition of the bodhisattva— the awakened warrior.

Iron Knot Institute was born of the work at Iron Knot Ranch. Over the years, we recognized a growing need among students, educators, activists and non-profits for techniques and curriculum that inspire, inform, and strengthen their efforts and capacity. To that end, we offer a variety of learning and practice materials to teach potent methods for the cultivation of good heart and the means for sustaining compassion in the face of adversity.

Ultimately, we see the this work as a way to bridge divisions that have sidetracked our collective journey towards a more just and equitable society.

Iron Knot Institute offers trainings and workshops led by Lama Shenpen Drolma, resident Lama at Iron Knot Ranch, as well as unique curriculums for schools, non-profits, social justice groups and those in the helping professions.

Iron Knot Ranch

Iron Knot Ranch lies at the end of a long dirt road in the mountains of southern New Mexico, 45 minutes beyond the middle of nowhere.

Meet Lama Shenpen Drolma

Lama Shenpen Drolma, an American woman, was ordained in 1996 as a lama (or Buddhist teacher) by her teacher, Tibetan meditation master H.E. Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche (1930-2002.) She worked with him as he developed the Bodhisattva Peace Training (BPT), an innovative format to bring to a secular audience the Mahayana Buddhist training of the bodhisattva— the awakened warrior. Since becoming authorized by him in 1991 to teach the BPT, and drawing on her feminist and battered women’s activism in the 1960s and ‘70s, she has offered this training extensively, working with students, educators, community activists and those in the helping professions.

Meet Michael Bradfute

Michael Bradfute is a life long seeker. A graduate of Naropa University’s Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics, he received a master’s in poetry under the guidance of mentors Allen Ginsberg and Anne Waldman. At Naropa, he was introduced to Buddhist philosophy through the writings of Chogyam Trungpa, but it wasn’t until he met Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche in 1993 that he found his path. In 1994, he met Lama Shenpen Drolma at one of Rinpoche’s teachings. Rinpoche instructed him to help Lama Shenpen for a time. From that point on, he devoted his life to upholding Chagdud Tulku’s activity. In 1999, he helped found Iron Knot Ranch. He’s spent most of the last twenty years building, but through this activity he’s developed a depth of informal practice.
